Our three current project areas are:

  1. boi-14Tangatapu
Restoring the mauri (life force) of the Tangatapu Wetland. This is a degraded kahikatea flood plain at the beginning of the DOC walkway to the Whangamumu Whaling Station on Rawhiti Peninsular in the eastern Bay of Islands. We are returning the swamp forest that once cloaked this valley tree by tree.
  2. Wairoa Stream
Restoration of the Wairoa Stream, from the top of Bulls Gorge to the Kerikeri Inlet. This 12km stretch contains beautiful waterfalls and bush remnants but there are also plant pests and eroded banks. With landowners, and the community in general, we are restoring the streams riparian margins and ridding the weeds. Fully functioning and biologically diverse ecosystems - native trees, birds and fish - is what we are after.
  3. Maungaparerua Stream
This stream and its riparian margins provide an important wildlife stepping stone between remnant forest and other habitats undergoing restoration in the Bay. With community support we are removing weeds and pests and enhancing habitat for north island brown kiwi and other endemic fauna and flora.

But Living Waters is about more than these. It supports landowners throughout the greater Bay of Islands catchment in waterways and watershed restoration and resilient land managment and habitat restoration. We work in association with Northland Regional Council, Far North District Council, New Zealand Landcare Trust, Department of Conservation (DOC), New Zealand Kiwi Foundation, schools, tangata and mana whenua, and community and landowner groups.

We promote, advocate and support marine conservation.
We meet the last Thursday of every month in Paihia and welcome new members.
